CamSIS

Student Self Service relaunched on 7 August. The design was led by direct student feedback.

On the same day, all administrative staff were given new homepages and users of CamSIS for Academics also saw a new task-based homepage when they logged in.

The new CamSIS self-service design is a massive step in the right direction for students using the site. The new look is much cleaner, simpler to navigate and more friendly, feeling like it's really been designed for student use.

- Martha Krish, CUSU Education Officer

What is the user interface?

User interface refers to the look-and-feel of CamSIS; how functionality appears on the page.

The situation

  • Feedback from the majority of users is that CamSIS is difficult to use for day-to-day tasks and that managing information is burdensome
  • Training and supporting users is difficult to manage due to a) the highly complex structure of the system and b) the way that supplied functionality is currently used to support key University processes
  • The system supplier will gradually be phasing out the current look-and-feel ('Classic') and replacing it with the new look-and-feel.

Project aims

  • Introduce the improved user interface, including job-centric dashboards and enhanced functionality
  • Make use of the supplier's latest technology as the 'Classic' look and feel gradually disappears over the next few years
  • Eventually achieve a consistent user interface across the whole system.

NB: The current view and access to functionality such as 360 and CamSIS Search will still be available.

Benefits to individual users

  • The look-and-feel will be the same for administrators, academics and students but the tasks and processes that the system supports will be tailored for each user group
  • Training and support will be improved
  • Simpler navigation and processes will help users trust CamSIS data

Benefits to the Collegiate University

  • Increased effectiveness, efficiency and user satisfaction
  • Reduced need for user support across the Collegiate University
  • Future improvements to CamSIS functionality will be consistent with the new look-and-feel.

Pilot

The new user interface was made available to College Tutorial and Degree Committee staff in July 2017 and their feedback is guiding further enhancements.

There's help for students on Moodle.

Target delivery months

The project is introducing the improved interface to users in phases so that the project team can continually gather feedback, assess success and make further improvements throughout the project.

Business lead

"This will be a significant improvement for those who use CamSIS infrequently but for highly important tasks, and who currently find it difficult to remember how to navigate through high-risk tasks."

Senior User Lead
